WHO IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING CANADIAN?

You decide.

It is time to shoot off your mouth. Here’s your chance to tell the nation which Canadian is the most embarrassing to call our own, and why.

As our national broadcaster embarks on its questionable quest to elect the greatest Canadian, you are invited to participate in an equally dubious endeavor, and one that speaks much more directly to the Canadian psyche: poking fun at famous Canadians.

In the process, we propose to accomplish nothing less than to establish a Canadian ideology that we can all call our own. One that includes the best and the worst that is Canada, leaning neither left nor right, but standing proudly in the centre, our tongues planted firmly in our cheeks.

Shallowness. Infamy. Mediocrity. Weakness. Stupidity. What makes a truly embarrassing Canadian? Will you choose a scandalous politician like Jean Chretien? An arrogant tycoon like Conrad Black? A shameful athlete like Todd Bertuzzi? Or someone just plain annoying, like Celine Dion?

Think of the one person who sinks below the rest and deserves to be named the Most Embarrassing Canadian. Check out the rules (there aren’t many), then submit your vote or nomination via e-mail to TMEC@Airenet.Com.

Update for November 30, 2004!

The

Most

Embarrassing

Canadian

2004

is:

Jean Chretien!

Canada has spoken!

The Right Honourable Jean Chretien has taken the title of The Most Embarrassing Canadian 2004 in a landslide. Although Canada has two official languages, Chretien seems to speak neither very well, which may explain how he managed to lead three straight majority governments – Nobody knew what he was talking about, but, in typically Canadian fashion, we were all too polite to mention it!

From his butchering of French and English in his bewildering speeches (Where is da proof?), his treatment of peaceful protesters (pictured left) and subsequent joking about it (“Pepper spray? I like pepper on my steak…”), his alleged complicity in the Liberal government advertising scandal, or any of many gaffes from his years as a Minister in Pierre Trudeau’s cabinet, Canadians from coast to coast are united in their shame for the former Prime Minister.

Chretien pulled in ten percent of the popular voting, beating his closest competitor by two and a half percent – a huge margin in this race. Voting was split between almost fifty different candidates, making a ten percent share an insurmountable lead. Chretien received support from Canadians from all provinces, and from every point on the demographic continuum. People of all ages, races, genders, economic realities, and political affiliations have come together to agree on one thing: Former Prime Minister Jean Chretien is The Most Embarrassing Canadian.

First Runner-Up:

Carolyn Parrish!

It was beginning to seem as if the Mississauga MP was campaigning for the title of Most Embarrassing Canadian! With seven and a half percent of the popular vote, she seriously challenged Chretien for the title, and she may have been one ‘doll-stomp’ away from taking the lead. Her anti-American/George Bush statements caused Canadians across the land to log on and vote their disapproval. While many people were light-hearted in their nominations of Ms. Parrish, many more were shocked, angry, and outraged in a very serious manner.

Second Runner-Up:

Celine Dion!

The chanteusse from La Belle Province has been making Canadians cringe with her superstar airs and saccarine pop stylings. Her Las Vegas wedding to her manager/father-figure gave us the creeps, while her new life as a shill for Air Canada seems less than appropriate, although her most famous song is about a sinking ship.

Third Runner-Up:

Adrienne Clarkson!

In a time when all Canadians have been experiencing layoffs, financial uncertainty, and hardship, Governor General Clarkson took dozens of her closest friends and hangers-on on a $5.3 million dollar tour of northern nations. While we don’t really think we need a representative of the Queen in Parliament, we are certain we do not need another hard partying, jet-set, rock star wannabe wasting taxpayers’ hard-earned money.

Fourth Runner-Up:

Ben Mulroney!

Whether it is because he sprang from the loins of his ‘allegedly’ crooked father or because he is slick, superficial, and utterly without talent, Canadians from all provinces do not like Ben. It is a testament to the power of television that, although his dad ‘allegedly’ screwed Canadians out of millions through Free Trade, NAFTA , and other blunders, Ben’s TV hosting duties have made him the public choice for The Most Embarrassing Canadian over his father by a two-to-one margin!
