Men and Women Equally Shameful –

No Gender Bias in Voting for The Most Embarrassing Canadian

November 10, 2004

CALGARY (MEDIA RELEASE) – While the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s reality program “The Greatest Canadian” has been a centre of controversy due to its exclusively male top ten, nominations to a website satire titled, “The Most Embarrassing Canadian” has represented both genders. “In fact, lately there have been many more female nominees put forth by readers than male” reports Ted Knudtson, the freelance writer responsible for the site.

Following the format of “The Greatest” project, Knudtson’s website invites the public to vote for their least favorite celebrities. The website will eventually crown Canada’s most embarrassing person of all time. While the polls are still open, making exact figures unavailable, Knudtson does report some trends in voting. “Unlike the CBC contest, women have been well represented in nominations. Overall, there are more men on the list than women, but the top ten is pretty even.”

While Knudtson is reluctant to explain the imbalance, he will offer an opinion. “Historically, men have been in more of a position to commit embarrassing acts, and have also behaved shamefully to retain that position. Given equal footing, men and women will inevitably place those feet in mouths in equal numbers.”
