Caring for your Sphynx

Bathing

Because Sphynx have no hair, it is a misconception that they are maintenence free. They do require occasional bathing and ear cleaning.

Due of the lack of hair that would normally absorb body oils, the Sphynx needs to be bathed periodically.  They can build up oils and collect dirt and sute from their surroundings which will make them dirty. Bathing is not a difficult task with a cat that has been used to a bath from kittenhood and it takes no time at all to dry a Sphynx. Some Sphynx will need bathing once a week or more while others will require bathing less frequently.  Using a dust free litter and keeping their surroundiings clean will help in reducing the number of bathes.

Be sure to make bath time as stress free as possible. If you kitten is stressed make the bath time as short as possible doing their faces and ears after they are out of the water. My prefered bathing technique is to use a mild baby bath with vitamin E and aloe. It is important to not get soap into their eyes or mouths.

Sphynx ear cleaning

The Sphynx ears can produce a large amount of earwax and need to be cleaned daily. A couple of ear drops put into their ears just before cleaning will  help to dislodge the earwax making it easy to remove with a Q-tip or cotton swab.  Be careful to go into the ear only as far as you can see.

Paws and Claws

The claws on both the  front and back need to be clipped regularly. Be careful to not clip on or beyond the vein which can cause bleeding. The best way to begin is just clip off the tip of the claw until you feel more confident as to how much you can remove.

 Paws

You should can clean the pads and pockets of their claws often using a  warm cloth or baby wipe.

Feeding

Your Sphynx should always have access to a good quality food and fresh water.

Caution

The Sphynx is an indoor cat only. If you are comfortable you can be assured that your Sphynx is comfortable as well. If  they  happen to get a chill they are smart enough to find a warm spot to curl up in which might be with another pet or under a blanket.

Sphynx are not hyperallergenic and if there is a possibility of you having an allergy the best thing to do before adopting one is to be in contact with a Sphynx first to spend some time with one.  if there is a problem.
